Era el final de los años sesenta; por un lado, el movimiento hippy inspiraba manifestaciones de un naïf insultante acerca del amor y el descubrimiento espiritual, pero por otro, el sueño ya había terminado, y la cara más amarga de la realidad estaba dejándose ver: las drogas empezaban a producir desagradables efectos secundarios, sólo con desearlo no se lograba el cambio, y la acción beligerante se hallaba muy lejana aún de la mente de los ingenuos hijos de papá que realmente habían creído que por obra y gracia de su apertura a nuevas experiencias había llegado el nuevo amanecer.
Ralph McTell, cantautor británico, critica en esta canción a un cierto tipo de juventud autocompasiva que se creía marginada cuando lo tenía todo. De la mano, se los lleva por un paseo por los suburbios londinenses, donde se encontraba, y encuentra, la verdadera marginación.
