El conjunto Marillion cumplía en sus inicios con todos los requisitos de cualquier banda sinfónico-progresiva que se preciara de serlo: largas composiciones ricas en cambios de tiempo y matices instrumentales, músicos de enorme habilidad técnica, gusto por los álbumes conceptuales. Sin embargo, algo le distinguía de los demás. Quizás fuera la fuerza y calidez que daba a sus interpretaciones este combo, en las que “virtuosismo” no significaba frialdad ni exhibiciones gratuitas ni bostezos; quizás fuera por las letras de Fish, intensas y poéticas, con las que muchos podíamos sentirse identificados.
